why French built the chapel of Santa Cruz In Oran

The Santa Cruz Chapel located in Oran province of Algeria,was built by colonial french in 1850 on the heights of Mount Murdjadjo, slightly below the Fort Lamoune.

  The construction of this building was decided because of a cholera epidemic that made thousands of deaths a year rather from Oran population.

The Chapel was restored many times over the years either by France during colonization or by Algeria after independence.



Count twenty minutes by car to get from downtown to the Santa Cruz Chapel.
Arrive on site is calm, the place exudes a calm atmosphere and an appreciable freshness due to the pine forests that surround it and its height. Since the Chapel view over the bay and the city of Oran is breathtaking. Walking a bit on the other side of the mountain side it is also possible to see the bay of Mers El Kebir. Every year thousands of tourists travel to Santa Cruz, which is now one of the most visited tourist places of Oran.
