Beauty of Lak Tonga In Algeria


A true gift of nature that this beautiful fresh water lak in communication with the Mediterranean Sea through the artificial canal Messida. Lak Tonga, with an area of 2700 hectares is located in the extreme northeast of the El Kala National Park. It is 70 km east of the city of Annaba and 3 km as the crow flies from the sea.

The lak is classified wetland of global importance under the Ramsar Convention (UNESCO) since 1983 and full area of the El Kala National Park.

The lake surface is 90% covered with an emerging vegetation. There are 82 identified plant species of which 32 are classified rare to extremely rare.
It contains among other mammals otters and deer Barbary. This species of deer is present in Algeria and Tunisia.

The lake is also home to Tonga tens of thousands of waterfowl (ducks, geese, Rallidae, herons, waders and others).

The lak is a nesting site of a large number of avian species. Among them, we have a colony of Ardeidae represented by Herons and Egrets. Marsh Harrier, Hen Water, Water Rail, White-headed Duck (endangered species), the scaup (species classified as vulnerable), Glossy Ibis ...

There are also meeting the Marbled Teal (estivante) and garganey (passage), Flamingo, spoonbill and many other species.
