5 brief facts about the Tuareg in Algeria

1- The meaning of The Tuareg name
       The origin of the word Touareg is still unknown. However, many assumptions are made as to its origin. For some, the word "Tuareg" come from Arabic meaning "abandoned the Gods." For others, the term comes from the Tuareg name of the Libyan region called "Targa" meaning "ditch or valley."


2- The Origin of The Tuareg
         This region is located in Fezzan, the Oubari region. Some rather think that the term originates from the designation "Aw-Targa" (son of Targa) atargi or in the name Berber tawwareq like medieval Arab chroniclers named the nineteenth century.




3- Touareg and French Colonial
         The term became tawwareg Touareg was popularized by the French during the colonial period. It is therefore possible to say Tuareg or targui or even tell the Tuareg  or Tuareg. 



4- Countries where there is a Tuareg
         The Tuareg are inhabitants of the central Sahara and its borders (Algeria, Libya, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso). Often nomadic, their settlement has accelerated since the second half of the twentieth century.



5- The language of the Tuareg
        They speak a Berber language, Tamajaq, or Tamashek Tamahaq by region. They use an alphabet called Tifinagh (pronounced Tifinar).
