City Oran "the radiant" (el Bahia) is a Mediterranean city, it's located 432 kilometers west of Algeria,
it is bounded to the north by the Mediterranean, west of Ain-Témouchent, south by sidi bel abbes and Mascara, and east by Mostaganem .

The number of inhabitants is 1 213 839 over an area of 2114 Km.
oran is located at the bottom of a bay open to the north and west dominated directly by the mountain of Aïdour. the agglomeration sprawls on both sides of the deep ravine of the River Rhi now covered.

Oran is an industrial pole (industrial area arzew, Hassi ameur etc ..) and university city (University of Oran, University of Science Technology, Faculty of Medicine, ect)

Meaning of the name "Oran"
its name means the two lions (wahran) in Berber.

History of the city

oran was the Xe century by Andalusian-Moorish merchants. it was occupied by the Spanish in 1509. 1708-1732 and 1791-1831, the town was possession of the sublime door (Ottoman Empire).

  In 1831, the city as the rest of the country became a French colony. the city has been Prefecture of Oran department which occupied the entire west. during World War II, in 1940 (July 3), the French fleet gingham fouvernement based in Mers-el-Kebir, was bombarded by the English fleet, from Gibraltar (1000 deaths).
On November 8, 1942, it was the turn of the Anglo-American landing prelude landed in Italy.

International airport Es-Senia is 12 km from downtown.one can also go in oran by Ferry from the ports of Marseilles, Sète, Alicante and Almeria. It is thought that the name "wahran" oran Arabic comes from the word wahr (lion) and its duel (two) wahran (two lions). 

the legend says that at the time (around the year 900), there were still lions in the area.The last two lions hunted were on the mountain meadows of oran and which also is called "mountain lions "
